To be effective at being a software engineer, and to be able to get into most prestigious technology companies, you will need to go deep on building analytical problem solving, algorithms, and data structure problems. Identifying the right data structure and most time and space efficient algorithm will help you solve hard technical problems. In the US, some companies do and some don't have educational requirements, but equivalent experience is required when you don't possess a degree.

Take courses like B.Tech in Computer science or study BCA-MCA. Learn basic programming concepts in c and object oriented programming concepts through c++. Also study databases like SQL, Oracle and Microsoft Access. Once you are thorough with your basics, then take languages like Java and C# and platfoirms like VB.NET, ASP.NET.
The most important thing is to think logically. Programming is all about logic flow.
