How do you become the youngest female CEO of a company?

Hi, i am going to school to be a business major so that I can hopefully own my own company one day. But first I have to start with working for another company. How do I build my way up to becoming a young female CEO? And what are things I need to do? What does this position entitle for me? #business #entrepreneurship

Hi Margaret,

I met with a mentor yesterday and he asked me why I felt I had to achieve certain milestones to get me to the end result I am looking for. I'd ask you the same question: do you want to be CEO of a company so you can learn the skills to be an effective founder/CEO of your own, do you want to be CEO of another company so you are respected and accepted by others, another reason? Are there other ways of doing this so as to not set yourself up with such a specific expectation? Point being, there are many ways to learn how to effectively run a company and manage people, you don't necessarily need to be CEO. I'd recommend a strong team of mentors and stay ambitious as you look for new opportunities, but if you've got an idea and want to venture out, don't limit yourself to such a specific career path. At the same time, if you're able to achieve CEO within reasonable time, that's a fantastic ambition. Just want to be sure you understand there are many paths to take, and becoming CEO of another company is a big task.

I believe that the basic things you need to have to be a CEO is good understanding of the business, industry and financial matters of the company. Also, you need to have good vision for the company in order to keep the business on track and able to accommodate the changes in the industry and technology-wise. Relationship skills play an important role as a CEO deals with company's shareholders, investors, executive management and employees.

In relation to the original goal of owning your own company, I believe that being a CEO of another company is not a requirement. I think what matters if you want to start your own company is that you have good understanding of the company you want to build and it's relative industry. Having a business major is a good starting point, I will advise you to have additional knowledge in financial matters as it gives you an edge if you know the in and out of your money in the business. Also, it will be good if you can gain good amount of experience in the industry you want to put your business on.

This is an interesting question, and I would ask the reader to really think about whether the main objective is to take on the responsibilities of being a CEO - particularly of a larger company -- or to achieve a cool title at a young age. The quickest way to become a very young CEO is to start your own company and start small. This could be satisfying and a great challenge (make sure you have the basic knowledge of accounting, project management and other basic skills and make sure you hire a good tax adviser). Or, if your goal is the former, look at the trajectories of your favorite ten top CEOs and see what common elements exist. Probably good education, hard work, canny business ability, good networking, a strong mentor and luck will feature prominently. Figure out your goal, chart a path, and good luck!
