Hi Zymeria! Lawyers can be paid a salary in which they are paid a bi-weekly check like any other job, commission, meaning they get paid by the case, or a combination of both. There are many types of lawyers and their salary can vary depending on their reputation and their area of practice. Many lawyers perform routine but complex tasks such as divorces, wills, or property closings. Many lawyers specialize in business transactions such as merger and acquisitions. It's always best to find an area you like and realize their are laws and regulations that govern that area. I recently had to acquire an attorney to assist with a traffic ticket. He charged a flat fee of $300 for his services and worked independently of a company. I've also had to deal with attorneys who worked for large firms and can charge as much as $500 an hour plus a retainer(fancy way of saying they hold a lot of money of your money to ensure they are paid) for their services. My best advise would be to increase your earning potential, earn the very best grades you can, find a field of that you are interested in, and be the best attorney that you can be. Succesful attorneys command higher prices.

Daniel’s Answer

The legal profession covers a wide variety of jobs. How you get paid, depends upon exactly what type of job you perform as a lawyer. For example, a lawyer with his or her own law practice is often self employed and bills their clients for the work they do for them. Often, they bill them at an hourly fee rate or at a flat fee for the job performed. However, other lawyers work for firms and the firm pays them an annual salary no matter how much work they produce or hours they work. Other lawyers may work for companies and will get an annual salary like the other corporate employees. Some other lawyers work for the government, and get paid an annual salary like other government employees. What type of job you have will dictate how you get paid.
