Brandon’s Answer

In order to market your business, you would need to find out mainly how exactly you want to reach your targeted audience. Some businesses are better suited using certain marketing methods than others, but it also depends on other factors as well such as where you live and the audience you are trying to attract to your business.

Here are some common methods that people tend to do for marketing their business.

Posting on social media about your business is the most common way that people tend to promote their work nowadays. This method can be relatively inexpensive, which is a benefit for businesses that are just starting out. This could include making a website or a blog and posting about your work.

Another way is to use word of mouth. Ask friends and families to talk to other people about your work. This can spread to others really quick, either by verbal communication or your friends and family posting about it on social media.

You could try going to a local community fair or community event to promote yourself. This method would allow you to verbally speak to the potential customer base yourself to showcase your work and talents. Sometimes the best methods is to show them in person what it is you can do firsthand.

David’s Answer

Hi Amelia,
As a freelance photographer, all my marketing is accomplished through the internet. I have a website which illustrates to prospective clients the quality of my work. Your website is the portfolio of your images. So, your website has to show images that are appropriate to the photography assignments that your are seeking. You should only post your very best work. Zenfolio and Smugmug are a couple of examples of websites that host photographers. There are others you can search out.
Once your site is up, you look for possible clients and send them an email suggesting your services and provide them your website address. I have had many clients that I have never met except through email.
In order to be successful, you will have to spend about 80% of your time marketing your business. If you do not commit to marketing your business seriously, success will be difficult.
I don't believe social media is particularly effective for marketing. It does not hurt you, but depending on what genre of photography you are interested in, it could be disappointing.
If you are going to present yourself as a professional photographer, you will want to project that concept to future clients and social media does not . Best of luck!
