What should I do?

I'm not sure what career path I want to take, I'm stuck between cement masonry, and going to fire school to become a firefighter. I enjoy both but I want a career I know I'll enjoy in the future as well.
What do you think? advice?

Thank you comment icon Hey there Isaac. Ask yourself this question, "if all of your bills were paid and you didn't have to worry about making money one day, what would you do all day for free?" Whatever that answer is, is the career direction that you want to go in. Elam B. King

I think your heading in the right direction. I do know one full time fire fighter. I did reach out to him this morning but haven't spoken to him yet. It's a great idea you have doing fire and forestry. That will definitely get you on your way.

Hi Isaac. Well looking at the two career paths take into account what will be most beneficial long term. You want to understand what benefit each career offers. I know people in both of your fields. The firefighter is very happy with his job and it provides him great benefits that include health care and retirement.
Thank you comment icon I feel being a fire fighter would be more benefitial long term, I'd be saving lives and building my own character. Do you have any connections, or people that know any firefighters? I'm in a system called "job corps" and I plan on doing fire and forestry sometime to get a feel for it. Isaac

Do you have an opportunity to volunteer or spend a day in that profession? If you could, see which one you enjoy doing more!
Thank you comment icon Right now, I'm in stone masonry in a system called "job corps" and I enjoy this job, I do but I also want to save lives, I plan on trying fire and forestry again see which one I'd prefer. do you think it would be an alright idea if I did stone masonry as a job as I go through college and fire school, I've recently been doing research on what I need in order to go foreward with this but I feel the internet will having missing pieces that some other person may know, Do you have any connections with any firefighters or stone masons? Isaac
Thank you comment icon Hi Isaac, I personally do not know anyone but, I would recommend you to look at your local firestation. They generally are welcoming volunteers as far as I know. If not, then make a linkedin profile and try connecting with people there. Good luck! Onur K. Polat, PhD

Gabriela’s Answer

Hi Isaac,
Interesting both careers sound great. Do you happen to have any friends/relatives in the field? Maybe getting feedback from their experiences would help you determine your choices. Maybe you can do both being a Fireman and cement masonry independently. Do a self-questionnaire for yourself to help you determine more of your choice. Maybe 10 responses about why you like each career maybe you might have more answers for one than the other. Pro/Cons of each one too. What resources do you count on to get you started?

Gabriela recommends the following next steps:

Make a visit to Fireplace, talk to people there about their daily routine looks like.
Do you want to be Cement Masonry with a company or yourself?
Which career offers more of what you are looking for.
Which one did you want to do first? what changed and why?
Which one do you see yourself doing in the future?
Thank you comment icon I appreciate this, thank you for the advice. Isaac
