Hi Lewis,

I think it's important to always be curious about your career. If you're still in high school, it's a great time to start thinking about what in life intrigues you, what your passions are, what interests you have, and where your curiosity can lead you.

For the majority of us, a career is essential to have in order to navigate the social and cultural aspects and there's a great deal of pressure in many cultures to excel and propel yourself forward through career advancement opportunities. A lifelong trick is balancing aspirations with contentment so understanding and discovering more about yourself in the process helps guide you along the career pathway with more ease.

The earlier you start, the more time you have to gain relevant experience and skills, and to make informed decisions about your future. It's important to keep in mind that your career path may change over time. It's common for people to switch careers or industries multiple times throughout their lives, so it's okay if you're not sure what you want to do right away.

It can feel overwhelming to not know what you want to do for the rest of your life. That is a daunting task for most of us. But, start small and follow your instincts but don't be paralyzed by indecision, it's best to jump after making a solid decision than to remain stagnant.

There are no mistakes or failures, only lessons and opportunities.

Thinking about your career will be an ongoing journey throughout the rest of your professional career - it's a process and can change soooooo vastly over the course of your first couple years out of college. Personally, I did my entire undergrad pre-med degree thinking I was going to go to medical school only to eventually become a marketer and now am actually a consultant!

Give yourself grace to come up with a plan and rework that plan whenever it doesn't fit any longer :) Your career is and always will be a work-in-progress.

Melissa’s Answer

In my experience, it is never too early to begin actively exploring what career may be best for you, but you don't need to feel pressured to make a final decision right away. If you’re still in high school, you can take steps to explore future careers and figure out what interests you and what may be a good fit. You can complete a summer internship in a field that interests you, take career interest tests to discover potential career paths that you may have never considered in the past, research the academic and professional requirements related to your current dream job(s), or get a part-time job to begin to develop your professional and/or people skills. If you are choosing to attend college and haven't decided on a career path when you start, that's okay! It is normal to start college by studying a variety of subjects before you decide firmly on a major or path to a certain field.

Now! If you have a particular interest in a field and feel passionately enough about it, it's never too early to pursue and continue reviewing. You own your next step and path. What are you interested in? What excites you the most? Start now.
