Juan’s Answer

It can be filled with wonderful experiences, people and accomplishments while earning decent to good income. It can also be demoralizing, frustrating, unfair and tough. It really depends on the type of company and people you work around in, as well as the type of craft, or job you perform. Some people enjoy minimum responsibilities for minimum pay, others aspire to greater things/responsibility and this usally generates greater income. Start somewhere, ask questions, learn, invest in training and certifications/licenses, and work safe.

Sondra’s Answer

Hi Gaige,

There are so many options in this industry. My Dad and brother worked their whole lives in construction (specifically flooring) and both had great success. They both started out working for others. Sometimes a small business and other times a larger corporation. Eventually they left and started their own businesses so that they could be their own bosses. That is when they had the highest earnings and both were able to purchase homes here in California and live comfortably.

The pay will range greatly depending on what specific trade you go into and if you have any specialties. It will also vary if you are in a union shop or if you work for a big company.

I work in construction and engineering for AT&T. Working in construction for a big company feels a lot different than a small business. There will also be different benefits depending on who you work for.

As far as coworkers/bosses go, you will always have some awesome ones and some that are not so great. I have always found that as long as I work hard and do my job I will be ok.

Hope this answers your question. Good luck out there!

Hi Gaige,

The construction industry is very robust and can take you down several career paths. You can be a part of the service industry or management. There are also general trades or specialty trades. Everything is different but everyone does work in conjunction with each other.

Pay varies depending on the trade or skill you provide. The side of construction that you chose also determines your pay. For instance Commercial construction may provide greater wages but may also require additional experience and knowledge of that industry to operate in compliance with code and jurisdiction compared to being in residential construction.

As for bosses and coworkers, it's really the same experience that you would receive in any other industry. There are good bosses that lead and and bring out the best in their crew, and there are terrible ones that don't. As for your co-workers, keep in mind, 93% of construction workers in the US are male and ages range from 18-65+. Hope that helps!
