Short answer - extremely. Longer answer - it is not unattainable, but you there are some people that are given natural gifts that cannot be replicated. That said, having been in the industry for over 20 years, "looks" will change with time. Commercial looks can vary by product, geography and the world around us. Uniqueness will always be marketable and there will always be someone that will look for that to connect their product or service.

You need to be prepared for very critical, but vitally necessary direction. As a talent, you will get way more No's that Yes's. Learn from those who have made a career in it and soak up their expertise like a sponge. Have a great photo reel or portolio. Find out your greatest asset and accentuate it.

As far as agencies go, any reputable agency will never charge you an upfront fee or require you to purchase a "portfolio package". If they do, I would be wary. Agencies know they will make money on you when you book. If you don't book, they don't get paid. So, any reputable agency will get their money, so they don't need to push packages. You will need to get pictures taken (including makeup, style). That will be a cost to you - no the agency, typically.
