Hello Abby,

Although I cannot provide a definitive answer on behalf of everyone, I can offer some advice to help you gain insight into pursuing a career in special education. To begin, enrolling in an accredited college or university that offers a recognized program in special education would be a beneficial first step. Such institutions can provide you with the necessary academic foundation and resources to get started in the field.

In addition to academic coursework, it is essential to gain practical experience working with students in special education settings. This can be achieved through internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities at schools or organizations that cater to individuals with special needs. Engaging in these experiences as early as possible will not only enrich your resume, but also offer valuable on-the-job training and help build connections within the industry.

Furthermore, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the various requirements and regulations pertaining to special education in your state. These may include specific certification or licensure requirements for professionals in the field, as well as guidelines concerning the provision of services and accommodations to students with special needs. Gaining a thorough understanding of these regulations will be indispensable in your pursuit of a career in special education.

Consider joining professional organizations related to special education, attending conferences or workshops, and staying abreast of the latest research and developments in the field. Networking with professionals in special education can also help you gain insights into job opportunities and potential career paths.

To sum up, embarking on a career in special education involves a combination of pursuing a solid academic foundation at an accredited college, gaining practical experience working with students with special needs, familiarizing yourself with your state's regulations, and actively engaging in professional development and networking opportunities. By following these recommendations, you will be well on your way to crafting a successful and fulfilling career in special education. I hope this information proves helpful to you and best of luck on your journey!
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much. This helps me a lot! I have been working with my schools best buddies program and have gained so much joy from seeing there smiles just by seeing me. I love being with them so much and I think it would be great to help them too in a greater way than being a friend which I still love doing. Me and my closest special needs friend do math together and I help him with is homework because math is his favorite hobby and special interest. Abby

Tania’s Answer

Good Morning Abby, Please speak with your teachers in school. There might be a teacher in your current school that can give you some direction.
When I went to college, I actually asked the teachers there for guidance to get me involved with the Special Ed programs. Once I found out that information, I went ahead and discovered a whole new world.
You have to do a lot of searching to find the information that you need. It will take time but it is worth it.
Thank you comment icon Tania, thank you! Abby
