What are some career paths for a sociology major?

I'm currently a junior in high school who will likely major in sociology, but I'm unsure of the career paths available. I also enjoy writing and individual research.

Bethany’s Answer

Hi Leah,
Sociology provides many careers in the "social work" area from mental health, to foster care and even a school or family counselor; the family counselor c/b a hospital setting or a company like Rosecrance dealing with addictions, mental illness, and even coping with death.
I would suggest that you speak with your high school counselor and see if you can get some assistance on lining up some classes AND going on some job shadows so you know what opportunities are in this field. This will give you a great idea what you like and don't like.

In the meantime here's a link for you to check out with some tips for you. https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/finding-a-job/careers-in-sociology

Best of luck to you in your future endeavors!

Allyson’s Answer

Hi Leah,
I am a Senior Sociology major and I will tell you what I have been told.
Sociology is a massive field in terms of what you can apply it to. My interests were in Human Resources, I was able to use what I learned in my major regarding people and interactions to then narrow down my path and figure out what part of HR I wanted to be in.
Other paths include researching (literally anything can have a sociological meaning in research, its all about what you make it), teaching, social work, etc.
Ultimately, it is an area of study that is very broad which makes it applicable to many different positions.
