Hello, Chloe !

First allow me to discuss or list the jobs that are in the fashion industry and than I will discuss why you should go to college. I will also talk about what would be entailed if you do not choose to go to college.

Here are the jobs in the fashion industry that are open to professionals : Sales Associate, Merchandiser, Stylist, Public Relations Specialist, Inventory Planner, Account Manager, Retail Buyer, Fashion Designer, Graphic Designer, Textile Designer, Creative Director, Product Developer, Technical Designer, Quality Assurance Manager and Production Manager. These jobs are highly competitive and you'll want to have as much edge as possible.

You should go to college/fashion school and get a degree. The reason why you should go is because you will learn many aspects of the hands on and business sides of the industry. Another reason is that you will be meeting people that can help you later on in your career and possibly while you are a student, by opening doors to opportunities you never thought of. In college, you will be able to build up a portfolio and an impressive CV/resume of your work. You will have projects in college that will be finished products and you can discover which niche of the large fashion world you want to pursue.

If you choose not to go to college, it may be difficult to compete with others who have the experience, collection of work and the network of connections acquired from being in college. You will have to possibly do it all through independent instinct without the support from teachers, mentors and academic counselors. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but it will also depend on which area of fashion you want to go into. You will also have to consider how much you want it because you may have to relocate to one of the fashion industry cities. This is a lot to consider, but worth it in order to follow your dream.

The one piece of advice I can give is do not give up. It is doable and you are in the right place right now because you have the interest and are making inquiries about it. Continue to be curious. Your decision about college should be one that you decide after determining whether or not that would be the place you'd like to be for a few years.

Best wishes to you in your decisions and on your way to beginning an exciting, creative study and career in fashion !
