Hi Kari,

Congratulations on beginning high school! High school is an excellent time to explore new and different interests through electives, social activities with friends and after school activities and clubs. I would recommend taking a few classes on subjects that you may not have much familiarity with--this gives you the opportunity to learn more about yourself and your interests. Learning about yourself and interests will take you far in future educational endeavors such as identifying what you'd like to major in during college.

It's not uncommon to experience challenges with new or old friends during high school; surround yourself with people who encourage and support you as their friend. Remember these challenges do not define you, remain confident in who you are as a person and your values during tough times with social life or classes.

Most importantly, have fun! With so many clubs an activities, homecoming and prom, learning to drive, discovering new interests and hobbies, this is an exciting time in your life!

I wish you the best as you enter high school, both academically and socially.

Hi Kari,

It's good to hear from you! When you enter into your first year of High School, I would say enjoy your journey. You can try taking an elective like Art, Photography, Graphic Design, etc. It really depends on what your school requires you to take in order for you to graduate on time. You can also join a science club, math club, Mock trial, robotics, play in a band, etc., or anything that interests you. When you're a junior, I would encourage you to pick a major that is right for you for college. I would also advise you to take the ACT or the SAT for you to get into a University. I would also encourage you to start writing essays for the Universities you will apply to. If you're planning to attend a local Community College after your senior year, then you should go for it! You won't need to take the ACT or the SAT, do any common applications, or write any essays. After two years of Community College, you will be on your way to a University. I wish you the best of luck when you're going back to High School!

Keyston’s Answer

Heading into high school, I'd say it's great to have a positive attitude about your studies and making friends. Focus on your schoolwork and maintain good grades, but also remember that building connections and being open to new experiences can be just as important. Just like in life, it's about finding a balance between academics and personal growth.
