Alex’s Answer

Hi Heidi,

Annual yearly salary can vary greatly for a sports professional. These jobs can range from 50K all the way up to 1 million or more a year. It all depends on what industry, what league, what team, and what part of the world the job is in.

There are many professional jobs within sports. There are athletes, coaches, trainers, psychologists, physical therapists, marketers, managers, agents, recruiters, buyers, merchandisers, nutritionists, and partnerships managers. You can almost think about each team as it's own individual company. The day to day is going to vary greatly by each of these professionals. The athletes will be interacting with their nutritionists, trainers, and coaches on the daily. Managers will be interacting with general managers, people who run the business, other companies, and marketers daily.
Each professional's day will be slightly different.

Hopefully this helps. There are lots of opportunities in professional sports both as coaches and athletes, but also to help the team and organization be the best it can possibly be.

Claxton’s Answer

Hi, Heidi. Although I am not a professional athlete, I live in a city, Charlotte, that has a number of professional sports teams and activities. Among other things, Charlotte has an NBA team (the Hornets), an NFL team (the Carolina Panthers), and we host the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on NASCAR's Cup Series schedule. In fact, many of the teams that participate in NASCAR are based in the Charlotte area.

What a professional athlete does on a daily basis depends, in part, on whether or not the athlete's sport is in season. During the season, a player will focus on practices and meetings geared toward studying the next opponent and, if their team is on the road, spend time traveling. In the off-season, a player may focus on training and non-sport related activities, including working with charities and civic organizations.

Salaries vary based on the sport and the league. Top athletes can make tens of millions of dollars per year, but many athletes make less than that. In fact, some players will play in other leagues in other countries when their league is not in season to bolster their incomes.

Professional athletes work with a lot of different people. Besides people in their organizations, which typically includes coaches, trainers, physicians, and front-office executives, athletes interact with the media, civic leaders, charity leaders, and even children, as some of athletes devote time and money to children facing serious illnesses.

Hopefully I was able to shed a little light into the world of the professional athlete. It is a tough life because of the physical demands many athletes face, but for those who are really good at it, it comes with some substatial rewards.
