All colleges focus on academics. Unfortunately, teachers/professors, are not there to entertain you. It's great when one of them tries, but not all are capable of it. So you must entertain yourself while studying.

Vickey recommends the following next steps:

Find some good music. As silly as it sounds, put your learning to music. Make up lyrics to replace the ones from the song with the material you are studying. You remember song lyrics, right? So if you study material is a lyric, it seems to suggest you will remember that too.
Study in small sets of time. Don't sit down to a "day" of studying. Study for an hour. Reward yourself with a TV show or something else you like, then study another hour.
Mnemonics. In second grade our music teacher taught us the Treble Clef mnemonic. The lines are Every Good Boy Does Fine and the spaces spell out FACE. Second grade was an incredibly long time ago, but I still remember. Make some of your own, or look some up on the web.
Use whatever "smart" devices you have. Google something. Use all available resources.
Go on a field trip. Studying art? Go to the museum. Go to some place you are comfortable or find some place entirely new.

Good question. It seems that a lot of researchers do have their doctorate, but there are plenty of jobs in research where you can start and go back for that doctorate later if you want to. It is always best to speak with someone in the field. They can point you in the right direction.
