Hello Blessing,

Here's a roadmap to success, filled with practical steps you can take:

Aligning with Passion and Purpose: Seek work that resonates with your passions and principles. This will create a solid base for your success. When you love what you do, you'll naturally put in the time and effort to excel.

Embracing Continuous Learning: Be a lifelong learner. Actively pursue chances to broaden your knowledge, acquire new abilities, and stay informed about industry developments.

Cultivating Adaptability: In our rapidly changing world, adaptability is key. Stay relevant and resilient by embracing new technologies and adjusting to shifting circumstances.

Building Networks and Relationships: Forge and maintain professional relationships. These connections can lead to fresh opportunities, mentorship, and support. Networking keeps you in touch with your industry and encourages collaboration.

Demonstrating Resilience and Perseverance: Setbacks and failures are part of the journey, but your reaction to them defines your path. Show resilience by recovering from setbacks, learning from failures, and persisting in your pursuit of goals.

Mastering Effective Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication is a vital career skill. Whether you're sharing ideas, negotiating, or collaborating, strong communication skills will help you build relationships, influence others, and navigate workplace dynamics.

Setting Goals and Planning: Set clear, achievable goals and create actionable plans to reach them. This will guide and motivate you in your career journey.

Showing Leadership and Initiative: Show initiative and leadership, no matter your position. Leaders inspire others, take charge of projects, and drive positive change. This is particularly relevant if you're an MD taking on research projects or a resident seeking to advance the field.

Maintaining Work-Life Balance: Success isn't just about career advancement; it's also about achieving a healthy work-life balance. Make time for self-care, family, and hobbies to avoid burnout and ensure long-term success. This might be challenging during medical school, but it's crucial to prevent total burnout.

Upholding Ethical Conduct: Maintain high ethical standards and integrity for lasting success. Trust and reputation are invaluable career assets, and ethical conduct earns credibility and respect. In the medical field, this will also help you steer clear of malpractice claims.

Jerome’s Answer

I think this will depend on your definition of success.

I knew I wanted to help people growing up, but I also wanted to make enough to take care of my family. Considered going into non-profit work, but none of the jobs I found paid enough for my definition of success. I found that growing my title and working hard created a number of resources that I can now donate or use to support the community.

Although we all dream of being rich, coming up with a realistic definition of success will help you move towards what you want in life.

Hello Blessing,

To have a successful career you have to define what success look like to you. Don't get caught up in looking at what others call success.

1. Make clear goals for yourself. I suggest writing them down.
2. Ask for advice from others on a similar path as yourself.
3. Don't let mistakes stop you. Success is a journey not a destination.

Thank you for your question. Many students have similar question. Firstly, have you thought about what careers you have interest?
Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about what you have interest, e.g. your hobbies, favorite subjects, etc. and identify the related careers
E.g. If you like music, would you like to be a singer, musician, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc.
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
6. Upon graduation, develop a long term career plan and breakdown into some short term milestones. Review the plan on regular bais
