Hello!
Pattern drafting is one of the most intellectually involved jobs in the garment manufacturing. It takes good math skills, some three-dimensional thinking, and an artist’s eye for shape and proportion.

When you are starting out, it’s ok not to feel super confident. Allow yourself some room for error and minor mistakes. This is a normal part of your fine-tuning your skills while trying to practice them on your own. Leave a generous seam allowance on those seams you are not completely sure about. For example, a 1” seam allowance is much more forgiving than a 5/8” that’s home sewers usually use. Wider seams will allow you to adjust the seam line if needed, within that 1”, and you can easily trim off the excess of material later on, when finishing your seams with a serger.

Another approach is to study the pattern
shapes of your own clothing. For example: when your favorite pair of jeans is no longer good for wearing, cut them along the seams into separate flat pieces. See what they look like, try to understand the relationship between the flat shape you see and the three-dimensional structure of pants. It’s very interesting and not as easy as it may seem.

There are many books on the subject of pattern making, and different authors offer different approaches, too. It’s important to figure out what approach works best for you.
Having worked as a professional pattern maker for many years, I’ve had many co-workers using very different approaches and techniques while drafting their patterns. Yet, all of those resulted in great fitting garments, and successfully went into production.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your pattern ideas. Use muslin ( or an old bed sheet) to test if your pattern works the way you want it to. Be critical of your own work ( the hardest part), make corrections to the pattern shape to make the resulting garment look better. Cut the next muslin to mock up the updated fit, repeat until you are ready to cut that expensive dress. Patience is key. Learn to love the process of improving your own work. You’ll be very much rewarded with the results!
Good luck! I’m so happy there are young talents out there who are interested in making patterns! It’s a good career, that pays well.
