Woudl it be better to major in something I love and make little money or major in something that pays more but that I don't love?

I love music and would major in music performance but it most likely won't make enough for me to eat.#whattodo

Deb’s Answer

From experience, major in something that you will enjoy. Money does not make you happy. If you enjoy it, you will miss very few days and feel fulfilled.

Traceen’s Answer

You are the only one who can answer that question.

Some people have accepted their job as a fact of life and are not happy with what they do, but it is a means to an end. Others want to be happy and do what they love despite the fact that they arent making as much money as they want and will have to live a much more modest lifestyle.

Considering that you will be spending all of your adult life working, what is the quality of life you want? What is more important to you? There could also be some opportunities that you never thought of in your major that you love that are more lucrative than what you even thought about.

Traceen recommends the following next steps:

Talk to advisors in your major to see what types of jobs are available, perhaps specialize in something that you never considered.
Look for people in the community who are in your field performing jobs that interest you and get feedback from them as to what challenges and satisfactions they have with what they do.
Research online for jobs in your major or related to your major to see what else might be out there.
