How do I choose my college schedule?

I’m not sure if I should take more morning or evening classes. I would like to work on campus at my university, and I’m not sure when it’s best to plan my classes so I can still work part time.

Think about when you learn best during the day and try to schedule your classes at that time. For example, if you’re a morning person like I was, you might want to take most of your classes in the morning since you might feel tired in the afternoon.

Colleges and universities usually offer many job opportunities at different times of the day. They know students often need to work, so there are many options. The school library, for instance, is open from morning until late evening. You can also explore jobs in the community around the university.

I think it is important to first think about when you are most productive throughout the day. Are you a morning person or do you feel that you are most productive in the evenings? It can be difficult to balance college classes and also have a job. I would encourage you to ensure that you only sign up for what you feel that you can handle with both your classes as well as the amount of hours you plan to work each week. To avoid burnout, it is important to not schedule too many credits that you do not feel that you can accommodate both this and a job (if that is something that you require). If you feel that you are more productive in the morning, it may be best to attempt to sign up for classes in the morning to allow evenings for some time to work and focus on your home work and studies. You may find that within your first semester that you start to get into a rhythm and find a schedule on what works best for you!

Great question! Many college students face this challenge each semester, so you're not alone. Start by scheduling your classes, then look for a job that fits around that schedule. Employers will need to know when you're available, and you'll have a better idea once your classes are set.

Whether you prefer morning or afternoon classes is up to you. Are you more active in the morning or in the evening? Keep in mind that many campus jobs are available during business hours, typically from 8 AM to 2 or 3 PM. You might consider scheduling classes later in the day to free up your mornings for work. However, prioritize your classes. Choose times when you can focus best and use your energy wisely. Remember, your education is the main reason you're there.

I hope this advice helps you plan your semester! Best of luck with your studies and job search!
