What is the best way to get involved with people outside of my roommate?

I don't want to only be friends with the people in my class or my roommate. Outside of organizations like sororities, what low-key ways to connect with people do you recommend?

Paul’s Answer

Most colleges and universities have a Student Life Office, which administers various organizations from clubs, student government, intramural sports, student activities and other social functions on the campus.

So, I would search the directory for a Student Life Office, visit their department and see what they have to offer as far as activities and other social events for you.

Claire’s Answer

While it may take some time to notice, many people in college are eager to make new friends, just like you. Sometimes, all it takes is someone brave enough to start the conversation. Keep your door open and greet people in your dorm. I remember as a freshman, there was a night I had no one to eat with. When I entered the dining hall, I noticed three others sitting alone. I invited them to join me, and soon we were having movie nights and hanging out as a group of four!

If your university hosts a club fair, make sure to attend and sign up for any clubs that interest you. Go to the first meetings and see where you feel a connection with others. Walk up to someone, introduce yourself confidently, and mention you're just looking to meet new people. If you have a specific academic interest, check if there are any professional fraternities on campus—these can be a fantastic way to meet people and grow professionally.

You can also look into any fun, non-credit classes your university offers, like yoga, pottery, or improv. You'll already share a common interest with others in the class, so start a conversation!

Overall, stay confident, open, and ready to chat with people. Your friends are out there waiting for you!

Find clubs or groups that people make based off of a common interest and try to mingle with people that share interests with you, everyone loves talking about things they like right? Good luck!
