What is the best way to form genuine meaningful connections in college with people who will help you advance your professional goals, provide academic and emotional support, and introduce you to new things?
As a 17-year-old senior in high school, making new friends this year has at times been challenging, as I feel like my peers have already found a group they belong to. However, throughout my high school experience I have branched out so much and met so many new people. Part of the reason I am majoring in communications next year is because I love meeting new friends and learning new things through connections with others. Although at times I can get overwhelmed, as beginning new friendships comes with its own set of anxieties. I find myself hoping I do not say the wrong thing and make a bad impression, or rushing to respond on social media in ample time, causing a flowering relationship to become a bit stressful. That said, I am looking for tips on how to reduce these little bursts of social anxiety as I prepare to make multiple new connections next year and continue to strengthen old ones.
How do I make good friends with other engineering majors
My name is Theo, and I'm going into my freshman year at Cal Poly soon. I'm going into college with almost all of my general education done. So I'll be going into my major courses straight away in college. I know that engineers are less social than your average person, myself included. I was just wondering how I can make friends with them, because I'm a little nervous as to how to do so. Do I just walk up to whoever sits next to me in class? What if they turn out not to be a good person? I'd also like to make friends with other majors, but I'm going to be around engineering majors most of the time, so I'm not sure.
How can I make friends with more confidence in college?
I am a senior in high school, and I struggle to make new friends because of my anxiety. I often feel like I need to change myself to suit others around me. I want to find my people and be able to stick with them with the confidence that they will always be there for me and not betray me or ignore me, like has happened in the past.
How worried should I be about getting into college?
I have a 4.04 weighted GPA, taken 8 AP classes, mostly honors/AP courses, but no extracurriculars because of my super strict parents. My ACT scores are 27 composite, with 31 English, 30 reading, 24 math, and 23 science, but I’m working to improve them. I really want to get into LSU or the University of Arkansas, but I’m worried my lack of extracurriculars might hurt my chances—even though I got into Louisiana Tech with a scholarship. I’m also unsure about going to Tech since it’s so close to home and I want a fuller college experience. How important are extracurriculars and ACT scores for LSU and UARK? Also, do you have recommendations for any other colleges I should consider applying to?
What is the best way to get involved with people outside of my roommate?
I don't want to only be friends with the people in my class or my roommate. Outside of organizations like sororities, what low-key ways to connect with people do you recommend?
How do you find friends who will be a good influence on you in high school?
I know a lot of people at my school and I'm unsure of how to weed out the ones who won't be great influences on me down the road. And once I figure out which ones I want to keep as friends, how do I respectfully distance myself from the ones I don't want to be friends with? Or should I try to be friends with everyone? My strategy right now is if they don't have some kind of rational plan for the future and what they want to do in life, then I probably shouldn't be friends with someone. What I define as a "plan" is an idea of what they want to do when they graduate, or at least a college they would like to go to, and good grades at the bare minimum.
How can a shy person be successful in college?
I love hanging out with people and participating in activities. However, I feel very uncomfortable when I don't know anyone in the room, so often I stay in and keep to myself. When I'm with a bunch of strangers, I feel like the odd one out and have difficulty getting comfortable enough to establish personal and professional relationships. Also, if I have a question in class, I tend to try and figure it out myself instead of asking the teacher, because when I do, I feel like a bother. Any tips on how to get over this and get involved? #college #college-advice #friendship #college-success
How do I guard myself from toxic people in college?

Would you recommend rooming with a friend for your freshmen year in college?
When I go off to school, I want to have a friend go with me so I'm not alone. I don't know what I would do at a big university, all by myself. I've considered having one of my two best friends room with me but I'm not sure if that will cause issues. We've spent the night over each others houses before but I feel as if it would be a different experience if we were to live together. I don't want to be alone but then again, i don't want this to start a problem in our relationship. #college #student #friendship
