Hi Josh,

For biology you want to look for research internships or just research related part-time jobs, contracts, or volunteering. Especially if you plan to look for a job straight out of school. Start getting close to your STEM professors and inquire about research opportunities. Most professors have some type of research they are working on and they might let you in to help, even being a research assistant is an advantage. Don’t be afraid to also ask if they know of opportunities for you. They have been in the field far longer and most likely have connections, what’s the worst they can say? No, and that’s ok. There’s a lot of research internships postings in the fall if you go on indeed or even on google and they usually have a deadline early spring semester so they can decide who they choose for the summer internship. Apply to many that are in your area or even ones in other states, some may pay for housing, transportation, and airfare. It really depends on you and what you’re willing to do to get it. If you get one the summer before sophomore year it will make you an academic powerhouse. The following internships will be a lot easier to attain as well because you already have experience. Finding the first research opportunity will be the hardest but do not give up! You got this!

Best of luck!
