How do you know that the career you are looking into won't be the wrong decision?

I want to major in finance, but I am not sure what I will pick as a career will be the best thing for me. I like math and dealing with money, but there are so many options that it can be hard or overwhelming to decide which one I want to do.

Ani, I am going to be 100% honest with my answer. You will not know if the career you are working is for you until you are doing it. I am saying this because you are good enough, smart enough, and resourceful enough to figure out what you want to do later on if finance is not what you thought it was. The most satisfying job I had I did not even know it was a job until I was working it. The jobs I thought I wanted in high school were not even in the field I am working in today.

It is impossible to tell someone who is 12-18 to pick a job, put 1000% effort into learning that job, get the job, and then keep that job for another 40+ years after that. Some of the jobs that were around when I was in high school don't even exist anymore (how many piano tuners do you know? how many cobblers do you know?). The people who were working those jobs figured out a way to do something else. Get a focus in mind in order to move foward, follow your dream, ask around and get an idea of what that job is, but also keep in mind that 10-20 years later you might not work that job.

Your chosen path of finance does have a little twist that other career paths don't. Most buisnesses deal with finances one way or the next. This means that if you are doing finance for one business and you decide that is not your scene, you can turn around and work at a different business that maybe is. An example would be lets say you are managing investments for people, you are good at it, it makes you money, but it is BORING. You look around and see a non-profit organization that does a cause you are interested in, so you decide to go with that instead. Now you are dealing with people and finances you enjoy more. Resturaunts, development companies, government, corporations, agriculture, and just about any organization with money running through it needs someone to look after that money and that will be you. You can change your workspace but keep the same job, other careers it is more difficult.

Find a biography about Martha Stewart and read it. Learn about how she did everything she did because she is truly amazing! She started in finance and then is living her later years in life as a legend! The path that she made for herself is not one that can be matched but is something that everyone should learn from!

Hi Ani,

Take your time with your decision, but remember, it's great that you're thinking about what's right for you. If finance is what you're curious about, why not give it a try? Once you begin your studies, you'll have the flexibility to explore and shift your focus with various classes. There are countless career paths out there, and many people find new directions even after finishing college. You've got this! Good luck!
