what can I do to prepare for college

I am a freshman in high school & I was wondering if there is anything I can do at this point to help prepare for college & med-school

There are a lot of strategies, and it really depends on what extracurricular opportunities are available to you. When I was in high school, I didn't have many options, so I had to create my own opportunities.

-Make sure you're keeping your grades up.
-Get involved in community projects. If your school doesn't have many clubs or leadership opportunities, look for local nonprofits or other organizations where you can make an impact.
-Participate in academic competitions whenever you can (e.g., math, robotics, history, geography, science fairs, or anything else related to the field you're interested in). These help demonstrate both interest and achievement.
-Build strong relationships with your teachers and school counselor. Consider checking in with them every few months so they get to know you well. That can make a big difference when it's time to ask for recommendation letters.

There are many things you can do, but the key is to build a profile that demonstrates both a genuine, sustained interest in the field you want to pursue and meaningful accomplishments in that area.

You asked a great question at the right time. Starting to prepare for college at this time will allow you to get to know yourself and your career orientation, to start to develop in person real time networking relationships with people who can help you to achieve your career objectives, and plan to take courses that will allow you to progress in a meaningful pace when in college. Also, you might be able to enroll in your local community college whereby you will be able to complete your associates degree as you complete your last two years in high school. Many people have been able to graduate from high school and from community college on the same day and start college as a junior instead of a freshman. Contact your local community college for more details. It is a great and exciting way to begin your education/career journey. Below are some steps that I have developed from my many years in Human Relations and College Recruiting that will help with the process.

The first step is to take an interest and aptitude test and have it interpreted by your school counselor to see if you share the personality traits necessary to enter the field. You might want to do this again upon entry into college, as the interpretation might differ slightly due to the course offering of the school. However, do not wait until entering college, as the information from the test will help to determine the courses that you take in high school. Too many students, due to poor planning, end up paying for courses in college which they could have taken for free in high school.
Next, when you have the results of the testing, talk to the person at your high school and college who tracks and works with graduates to arrange to talk to, visit, and possibly shadow people doing what you think that you might want to do, so that you can get know what they are doing and how they got there.
