Hey Josephine,
Its great that you are already thinking about these things as a freshman. I think there are a few things to consider when choosing your extracurriculars in high school.

The first thing I think you should consider, is simply what you're interested in or passionate about. Colleges like to see who you are as a person and what makes your character unique, so I recommend you begin by joining clubs where you can explore your interests. You should also show a commitment/progression through high school in these clubs: maybe showing your impact on the club over time or different projects you've done or even what you've learned about yourself over time. Its good to differentiate yourself from all of the other people who are applying to the same schools, so try to be unique in your own way.

In terms of clubs or activities that are relevant to both law and nursing, you can consider a few of these options: debate team, mock trial, student government, health/science clubs, volunteering at a hospital or elderly care homes, etc. There are a bunch of different things you can do, so just explore your options. Additionally, see if you can take classes related to the subject matters, such as science or writing classes that are relevant.

Good luck!

Start with the very basics and feed your essays through ChatGPT to edit for grammar and spelling. AI is an amazing tool to assist you in producing professional, concise essays and can assist you in coming up with ideas or verbiage you wouldn't typically think about. Don't have AI write your essay for you. It will come out flat and with none of your personality coming through.

AI tools like ChatGPT also answer questions for you like "What are the top 5 things <college of choice> look for in a successful candidate?" or "Give me the top ten questions <company of choice> ask in a job interview for <job> and what answers do they consider correct?"

Also, show your essays to your school guidance counselor for final editing that spellcheck and AI might miss. You want to go to college, not "collage".

Good luck!

Martin’s Answer

The most important thing is to be yourself and enjoy what you are learning. Stay committed to your chosen path, but remember, you can always change it later if needed. If you're not confident in yourself or your interests, it will show. College is a time to explore different experiences and combine what you learn. If you're unsure about nursing or law, express it in such a way that keeps your options open. These fields can even complement each other.
