Hi, Maria !

Your profile suggests that you are interested in work for Data Science, but you do not have a career selected yet. Knowing how to go about obtaining consulting work depends on the field of work you'd be applying to.

When you work as a consultant, it is usual that you would get a 1099 from each company or client if you earn $600.00 or more from them in a calendar year. You would be responsible for paying your own taxes, including self-employment taxes for Social Security and Medicare, which amount to 15.3% of your net earnings at this current time. You also have to set aside some money to pay the IRS estimated quarterly taxes so that you do not incur penalties. You will need to know this information, updated, when you begin your consulting work.

That being said, regardless of the nature of the work, you'll have to probably do more than look for work just online although you may get remote companies that have employment notices on some websites. So register at Indeed, Linked In and other employment websites, especially ones that cater to your line of work. You would also need to do networking in your community and attend field connected conferences, events and activities so you can promote yourself in person for possible remote projects. You would also need to build and own a business website that people can see and know the services that you offer and other information.

Your best bet is to attend college and obtain your degree in the field in which you want to consult in. If applicable for the field of work, obtain as many professional certifications as possible, too. You will need credibility and for people to know you in order to be chosen for temporary work or specific projects.

A college path can teach you the ins and outs of having a consulting service. While enrolled in your Major, see if there may be a Business course that covers types of businesses including consulting. Also visit your on campus Career Center as they may be a good resource for this. Through your college path, you will meet lots of people and it's a good way to make contacts and network as colleges usually have career centered activities for the students.

So there really is no "best way" for finding consulting work, you have to do several things to promote your service and let people know who you are. There are also Directories for various fields of work that you can register at as a person in your field of work available for consulting work. You can find these directories for your field of work through a search online. Once you take the college path, you will learn a lot about what you want to do and there are lots of resources on campus.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
