I'm not sure what type of dance you are referring to, but here are two very different paths that led to similar places:

Luam: she didn't start dancing until her senior year at University of Pennsylvania (where she majored in Biological Basis of Behavior, and had double minors in Psychology & African American Studies), but since then she's worked as a dancer and choreographer with Beyonce, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Britney Spears, Dawn Richards, Kanye, John Legend, and many others. During her senior year in college, she started dancing with African Rhythms Dance Company and Ballet Shango in Philadelphia, then she moved to NY, and while working at AOLTimeWarner’s TIme Inc. in the Advanced Technology Group, she trained at Broadway Dance Center and Djoniba Dance Center to study Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, West African, Modern & other dance styles. Meanwhile she continued at Time Inc, working on projects with Fortune, People, Entertainment Weekly, as well as their Intranet & Advanced Communications Group. She began teaching at Djoniba Dance Center & NY Sports Club in 2000 and later Broadway Dance Center. She began to pursue dance full time in 2002.

Jared Grimes: Jared was born in Queens and started dancing at age 3. He was amazing at tap dancing--he performed in “Showtime at the Apollo” when he was 10 years old, and toured nationally with the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble. At 18, he moved to New York City. There, he auditioned for and got into Rhapsody: The Company. Since then, he's been dancing and acting, including touring with Mariah Carey, and dancing for Common, Busta Rhymes and the Roots.

Hi, I'm answering on behalf of a friend of mine that I'm highly inspired by. She started dancing in high school and has achieve so much. There were a lot of nay sayers because she didn't start dancing at a young age, but somethings talent and drive trumps how young you started. Do it, because it's possible!

Here's a video of her in "So You Think You Can Dance"

She did with TedX Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

I started dancing at 5 at a small local dance studio. When I was 13, I transferred to the Washington School of Ballet in Washington, DC. I also spent summers studying with the Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, and American Ballet Theater between the ages of 13 and 17. Summer programs are a great way to broaden your repertoire and expose yourself to new styles of dance.

At college, I danced in an on-campus company.
