How can I get an on campus job as a first year?

I go to UC Santa Cruz and am a bio molecular engineering major. I am trying to find a source of income, but it’s hard to find departments that are offering availability.

Hello again, Gabrealle !

I responded to your 3 year Bachelors Degree personal plan from your other post and I can also advise you how to obtain a job on campus.

There are work opportunities at UC Santa Cruz where you are currently enrolled, but students would need to be eligible for the on campus jobs. For the Work Study Program, you would have to complete an application and be eligible for Federal Student Financial Aid. You would check the Work Study option on the application. When you receive the response of your financial aid, there will be a dollar amount for Work Study. It usually goes year by year, but double check that with your financial aid office on campus. You then go to any department or building you'd like to work at on campus and state that you're there for a Work Study job. They will show you what jobs are available. Each job has an hourly wage amount. Whichever job you choose, you divide the Work Study grant amount by the hourly wage and that is how to figure out how man hours a day or week you will have to work to use the work study monies. Your pay will come from the Federal Student Financial Aid program, not the college. Visit your on campus Financial Aid Office to see if you are eligible.

Oh, I am sorry. Sometimes I still live in the 20th Century. To see Work Study jobs, you can go to the website Handshake. Also at The Career Success website and the UCSC Career Center.

Another way to obtain on campus work is through the California Dream Program but that is for undocumented students. There is a Work Study component to that program.

UC Santa Cruz directly hires students for on-campus employment through its Student Employment program. These jobs can bee seen on the Handshake website. It lists jobs and internships. I would suggest asking the financial aid office or the Career Center staff about the Handshake website.

You can obtain detailed information for all of these programs at your on campus financial aid office.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
