The first step would be to complete your undergraduate degree in an area of science or a pre-medical major. I always recommend to research medical schools you would be interested in prior to selecting your degree path in undergrad as each school can have very differing requirements and you want to be sure that you take every prerequisite course needed for the medical schools you intend to apply to. Medical school is very competitive, so I would recommend volunteering in hospitals, shadowing physicians in their office, and completing other healthcare related volunteer work during undergrad. Additionally, begin studying for the MCAT as early as your first year in undergrad. You will want to score well enough to be competitive upon application, even if that means retaking the exam. Focus on keeping a high science and high overall GPA and do not be discouraged if you need to retake the MCAT to increase your score (which is why I say to begin studying so early). You will want to apply to medical schools all throughout your 4th year in undergrad (some schools as early as 3rd year depending on application cycle) so be sure you have already completed substantial volunteering as well as your MCAT. If called for an interview, be sure to study and practice for an interview as this is your chance to stand out from all of the other applicants. Once accepted, medical school is a whirlwind. Before you can become an OBGYN and specialize, you simply have to become an MD/DO. It is extremely rigorous and fast paced but it will be the fastest 4 years of your life! Come 4th year of medical school, you will apply for something called the MATCH. This is where an algorithm-based program will determine based on your med school journey, USMLE scores, and overall clinical experience what specialty you will match to and ultimately pursue after graduation. Many many students match with their desired field because that was their main interest and focus during medical school so it was where they most excelled. Some unfortunately will match with another specialty, and some will not match at all and can pick from a pile of unchosen residencies or can defer match to the following year. It is a very anxious time for medical students but if your goal is to match OBGYN, I would recommend research in the field under a preceptor during medical school, taking elective clinical rotations in OBGYN clinics during medical school, joining OBGYN clubs, etc, to bolster your chances in matching with OBGYN. Sometimes, you just simply score better in other specialty areas and end up somewhere completely different than you had planned and you may be happier than you imagined. I always say definitely have a specialty path that interests you, but make sure you always still have the love of medicine at the foreground because that is what will continue to drive you through the hard times and the hurdles. The path is long one, but it is an enriching one. I wish you the best of luck on your endeavors.
