How will AI effect the way we learn and study in college?

I am starting college in Fall of 2026 and have a lot of interests. I want to start my own business one day, and I have been reading about all the careers that will be replaced eventually by AI. I am excited to start college and I'm willing to work hard but I want to be sure I choose a career that will be prosperous and rewarding, not one that will be replaced by robots.

Hi Hannah. AI is already changing the way we live, work, and learn. One way AI can help is by making studying easier and more efficient. AI tools can help organize notes, summarize readings, and create practice questions that match your needs. This means you can spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on learning, thinking creatively, and solving problems. These are the skills that are harder for machines to do.

AI will also change which skills are important in college and in the workplace. Jobs that involve simple or repetitive tasks may be replaced by machines, but careers that need creativity, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and leadership will still be in demand. Since you want to start your own business one day, learning how to combine technical knowledge with creativity and decision-making will be very helpful. College is a great place to practice these skills.

Moreover, AI can help you test ideas and improve your understanding faster. For example, AI can help you analyze market data, explore business strategies, or come up with creative project ideas. This allows you to focus on thinking critically and being innovative, which machines cannot do.

Travis’s Answer

I know you are already a few semesters in, but don't be afraid to use AI to advance your development. Just don't fall into the trap of letting it think for you. Use it as a research tool or a collaboration partner. Make sure you understand everything it does. Ask it to explain parts you do not understand. Most importantly, ensure the final product is your own. It is easy to spot the AI tells now. Your voice is one of the most important aspects of using AI successfully.

Pradeep Kumar’s Answer

This is a great question, and you are already thinking about college in a smart way. AI will definitely change how we learn, study, and work, but I would not choose a career simply by asking, “Will AI replace this job?” A better question is: “How can I build skills that will remain valuable as AI changes the way work gets done?”

I work in AI and cloud technology, and one thing I have learned is that major technology shifts often change jobs rather than simply eliminating them. People who learn how to use new technology effectively can create entirely new opportunities for themselves.

In college, I expect AI to increasingly become a learning partner. You may use AI to help explain difficult concepts, brainstorm ideas, practice problems, research topics, learn new technical skills, or get feedback on your work. But do not let AI do the thinking for you. The most valuable skills you can develop are critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and the ability to evaluate whether an AI-generated answer is actually correct.

Since you want to start a business someday, I would also avoid putting too much pressure on yourself to identify one perfect “AI-proof” major. Instead, consider combining a strong area of expertise with business and AI skills. Whether you become an engineer, healthcare professional, financial analyst, designer, scientist, marketer, or entrepreneur, understanding how to apply AI in that field can become a competitive advantage.

Think of AI as a tool you need to learn to work with, not just a technology you need to compete against.

You are entering college at an exciting time. You do not need to predict exactly what the job market will look like four or ten years from now. Instead, focus on becoming someone who can learn quickly, solve meaningful problems, understand technology, and adapt when technology changes.

If your long-term goal is entrepreneurship, that adaptability may be one of your biggest strengths. Do not try to find a career that AI cannot change. Prepare yourself to be the person who knows how to use AI to create what comes next.

Pradeep Kumar recommends the following next steps:

Take an introductory AI or computer science course, even if technology is not your major.
Learn the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship through classes, student organizations, or startup clubs.
Build something using AI. It could be a small app, a website, a research project, or even a solution to a problem you notice on campus.
Develop strong human skills. Communication, leadership, curiosity, judgment, teamwork, and understanding customers are especially valuable for someone who eventually wants to build a business.
When using AI for schoolwork, learn the material yourself and follow your college’s academic-integrity and AI-use policies.

Suman’s Answer

Hannah, first off, how exciting that you're starting college in Fall 2026 and already thinking this carefully about your future! That kind of intentionality is exactly what sets successful people apart.

Here's the honest truth about AI and college: it's going to make learning more personalized, not less human. Think of AI as a really powerful study partner. It can help you review material faster, explain concepts in different ways, and free up your mental energy for the stuff that actually matters: critical thinking, creativity, and building real relationships with professors and peers.

As for careers being "replaced by robots," I want to push back on that fear a little. Yes, AI will automate certain tasks, but it's also creating entirely new careers that didn't exist five years ago. The students who will thrive are the ones who learn how to work alongside AI, not compete against it. That's actually a huge advantage for your generation since you're entering college right as this shift is happening.

Since you want to start a business one day, that instinct is gold. Entrepreneurship, leadership, and the ability to spot problems worth solving are deeply human skills. AI can help you execute faster, but it can't replace your vision.

Suman recommends the following next steps:

Look into your college's resources on AI tools for studying. Many schools now offer workshops on using them responsibly.
Consider exploring a major that blends technology with business, like Information Systems, Computer Science, or Data Analytics.
Seek out clubs or programs related to entrepreneurship on campus. Building that network early pays off enormously.
Don't be afraid to take a course on AI or machine learning basics. Understanding it makes you less afraid of it and more empowered by it.
Focus on developing "human skills" alongside technical ones. Communication, leadership, and creativity will always be in demand.

Sandeep’s Answer

That is a fantastic question to be asking before you start college, Hannah!

AI will change how you learn, but not the importance of what you learn. In college starting in 2026, AI tools will become your personal, highly efficient study assistant. Instead of spending hours summarizing texts, AI can do it instantly.

To prepare for a career that is prosperous and rewarding, you need to focus on skills AI can't replace. Since you want to start your own business, this means developing critical human skills alongside your academic major. AI will handle data and you must handle the people, the strategy, and the vision.

Therefore, choose a major that truly interests you, then focus on becoming an expert in using AI to enhance your output, while concentrating your energy on developing human-centric skills.

Hope this helps!
