Hello, Ka Chun !

Your first step in knowing more about the Fashion Industry and what Fashion Designers do is to explore this career. The best way to learn the skills or sharpen the ones you already have and to learn how to start your career would be to go to Fashion School to learn the role of Fashion Designer.

A Fashion School path is going to teach you everything. Along with the knowledge and skills such as drawing, sewing, fitting, altering and managing a fashion show of your work, you would meet a lot of people that can be valuable contacts for work if you attend Fashion School. This is an opinion business and can demand a lot of hours, focus and energy. It requires collaboration and foresight for every project you work on. You can also learn how to market your brand through a fashion school path. Doing it without the structure of fashion school may be hard and take more time to build up contacts in the industry and have less credibility since you wouldn't be affiliated with an industry institution or person. So going to fashion school is crucial if you want to learn and begin a career as a fashion designer.

You also need sharp presentation skills, presenting your fashion line in a unique and exciting way so that buyers will take notice. This is an opinion business so gaining contacts is very important and getting opportunities for projects and fashion shows of your work is vital and it is something that happens at fashion school. The biggest challenge and responsibility you'd meet would be to finish your creations on time with a deadline and fashion school can get you used to acing that. Private and custom clients also want their clothes or costumes on time, too. Fashion Designers spend a lot of time on their creations and you must be willing to give the work priority.

A really cool program in San Francisco which provides you with hands on experience in design, sewing, and sustainability is SCRAP’s Sustainable Fashion Design Summer Intensive and it is designed for students aged 12 to18 and focuses on creative practice, mending, repurposing, and garment construction using upcycled materials. Definitely apply to this program as soon as possible. This career is learned by doing it. Inquire about this program at the YMCA Bayview and Boys and Girls Club.

Also in your city, the Academy of Design offers camps where you can learn the full fashion design process before fashion school, from sketching and fabric selection to sewing on computerized machines. At the end of the program, they give you the experience of having a fashion show or photo shoot of your work. Also, California College of the Arts hosts a pre-college fashion design program for your age group. The Academy of Creative Arts Summer’s Project Endeavor Fashion program offers a high school level summer course in San Francisco that challenges students to develop their creativity and design skills. Participating in these programs is a sure way to make the career real and learn hands on how it is.

Everyone's fashion design career goes differently, but the more knowledge, hands on work and contacts you can make, the easier this career will seem. No one can tell you how your career will be, you have to let it unfold step by step.

Start exploring Fashion Schools when you are 100% sure that this career is for you. You can search online for the Fashion Schools in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
