Hi Alana!

These are some exciting potential career paths to explore! I've provided a short overview of each of the career paths you're considering below as well as some similarities and differences to consider when reflecting on which you want to pursue.

1) Accountant | This path would begin with a Bachelor's degree in accounting for most entry level roles, but to pursue licensure in accounting (CPA) and more competitive roles, most aspiring accountants will also pursue a Master's degree (1-2 years) after their Bachelor's degree.

2) Doctor | This path begins with a Bachelor's degree with specific pre-med required coursework, then medical school, and finally residency requirements. It is the longest and most expensive path and many aspiring doctors begin to gain research, healthcare, patient-facing experience while pursuing their Bachelor's because of how competitive the field can be.

3) High School Math Teacher | A Bachelor's degree in math and/or education may unlock certain opportunities, but many teachers end up pursuing a Master's in Education as well. It's helpful to gain student-facing tutoring or teaching experience to determine if this field is a good fit for you.

Accounting and teaching math both involve a focus on number. Doctor and teacher both work directly with people and have a direct positive impact on people. I think it could be worth thinking about whether you prefer working with numbers or people more, thinking about how long you'd like to be in school, and doing informational interview with one person in each field to help provide you with some additional perspective as you make this decision.

The good news is that you are thinking clearly *now* about which career paths will be the most meaningful for you and the best fit. Asking these questions early and being open to reflection is more important than having it all figured out right now. :)

If you're thinking about becoming an accountant, it's important to get the right degree and some practical experience. Most people start with a bachelor's in accounting or finance. You'll also need to learn the basics like taxes, bookkeeping, and financial reporting. Many people choose to become CPAs because it really helps when looking for jobs. Doing internships while you're studying is a great way to get real-world experience.

If you want to be a doctor, you probably know the steps. You'll need a bachelor's degree, then go to medical school, and finally complete a residency. It's a long journey, but it's well-organized. If you're committed, start by taking the right science courses and getting some volunteer or work experience in healthcare.

To become a high school math teacher, you'll usually need a degree in math or education and a teaching credential. You'll also do student teaching before having your own classroom. Being patient and good at explaining things is important. The great thing is that a strong math background can also be helpful if you decide to switch to finance or healthcare later on.
