What is it like to be a lawyer (my choice is a defense attorney) and how can I take advantage of the time I have to become one?

Hello, my name is Luis, and I’m a middle schooler at Crane middle school and my goal is to become a defense lawyer. I wanted to do this because I realized that I wanted to help people with my knowledge and I thought it was better to defend someone than to accuse someone. I personally don’t know any lawyers in my family, friends, or area but what I’ve been able to find out that you need a doctorate with 7 years of schooling which include University in majoring in something like philosophy or what I think is important Justice and criminology, and finally passing a bar exam. However I want to know what steps I can take know because it will be easier to major in that University if I actually have my own credentials. I also do want to know what life as a lawyer is because it’s great to have knowledge of the law but it’s also important to have soft skills like great communication, sympathy, attention to detail, or having a natural lying detector as skills of a lawyer. I am willing to commit to being a lawyer because it something im truly passionate about.

Hi Luis: I have been a lawyer for over 40 years and did not have any lawyers in the family and knew only one who refused to give me a letter of recommendation - even though I babysat for his grandson! So I know the road ahead of you can look hard.

Right now just be a kid! Study hard, keep your grades up and help around the house and in the community. You may want to go to your local courthouse and watch a criminal case. This way you'll have an idea what criminal law entails.

You have high school(4 years), college(4 years), law school (3 years) so you have a long time ahead of you. I had to work my way through school so it took even longer. (I even drove a cab) So take your time. Keep your grades up, Stay out of trouble, play sports and have fun.

Good luck.
Thank you comment icon Hey Dennis, thank you for responding to my question, this makes sense because it seems like becoming a lawyer like yourself takes time , passion, and commitment so thank you for easing my reasoning on that I had to become a lawyer like… by tomorrow. And I can understand why to enjoy my time now because it’s best to work on yourself before you try to help someone if you can’t help people like your family, friends, or yourself. And you know what I hadn’t thought about going to see a court case but I totally understand on why to go watch one so thank you for that information because I will 100% be using it. Thank you very much. -Signing off , Future Lawyer of the American justice System Luis- Luis
