Museum Curator- How to get experience?

What is the best way to get experience in a museum if I want to be a curator? I am going to start my Master's program in the fall, but I feel like I am behind on field experience. I have applied for internships, but I am never qualified enough to get any. Should I start by volunteering or networking?

Both studying and gaining hands-on experience are important, but you don't have to do them all at once. Starting a Master's program is a wonderful chance to build a strong foundation and shape your thinking as a future curator. When you can, dive into being an audience member by exploring exhibitions from various topics and cultures, as this is a valuable way to learn.

Meanwhile, try to slowly add practical experience by volunteering, doing internships, or working on short-term projects. Even if these roles aren't directly related to curating at first, they will help you learn how museums operate. There's no need to hurry—taking things one step at a time often leads to steady and lasting growth.

Judy's advice is very good. I would add that you may join professional organizations as a student for a small fee. These organizations often have webinars and online training programs that could help you develop curating and interpreting skills. Depending on what state you are in, most states have history and museum organizations that hold conferences and webinars. For national organizations, I would suggest the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) and the National Association for Interpretation. They both have robust websites that you may scan to determine the information they have that is relative for you.
