#Spring26 How as an RN do you combat compassion fatigue?

I've completed my pre requisite classes for the ADRN program near me and I remember a lot of my friends in the RN field feeling emotionally burned out. I want to render the best and most compassionate care I can, so I'm wondering how you still keep your heart as well as your head in the game?

Remember to leave your nursing work at work, no matter where you are. If you keep thinking "what if," bring work home, or don't make time for yourself, it can get overwhelming. Also, when healthcare workers gather, they often talk about work, which can add to burnout. Learn from your experiences at work, but leave them there. Work issues are like any other job. For example, a stockbroker who is always researching might not have time for themselves. Learn from challenges, but don’t let them take over your life.

Michele’s Answer

It is good to start developing strategies about burnout and compassion fatigue. I think in addition to the previous response I would add the following. Ask yourself everyday why you do it? Most will say I got into this profession to help people or because I want to affect change for others. Even when you are tired and frustrated, remember that. No matter how hard it is, as a nurse you have the power to be there when people are at their most vulnerable. It is an honorable profession. It will not be perfect, but find the one person or thing that brought you a moment of joy or reminds you of the purpose.

Good luck.
