I just graduated and want to take a career path in public relations, what should I do first?
I studied mass communication in school and i focused mainly on PR. I have read quite a lot about PR, now I want to know the first step to actually practice PR.

As you start out in PR, a summer internship is one of the best ways to gain hands‑on experience and build confidence, while also applying for entry‑level roles to keep momentum going—both paths reinforce each other early on. Take time to polish your CV so it highlights transferable skills like press release writing, LinkedIn or social content development, media research, and campaign support, even if they came from coursework, volunteer work, or campus roles. Focus less on job titles and more on what you actually did and learned. Keep networking consistently—many PR opportunities come through conversations, not postings, and relationships compound over time. Most importantly, be patient with yourself: every pitch you write and connection you make is building the foundation for a strong career. Best of luck!

Network. The keyword in Public Relations is PUBLIC. Find the right people.

I always recommend starting at an agency. It gives you opportunity to work with different clients and do a variety of different projects so you can learn what you like, what you don't, where you excel, etc. And from there you can refine your career based on what interests and motivates you most.

Hey Eunice,
Congratulations on graduating! I can connect with you because I also graduated with a degree in mass communications. I think the first step is building your portfolio. Volunteer for different events and internships (paid and unpaid) whether it’s social media, networking or marketing, anything that can show your potential and skillset. I would also consider connecting with people on LinkedIn and network. This is an opportunity for people to learn who you are and what you bring to the table. Lastly, look into entry level positions.

The most time consuming step that requires patience is finding that first "paying" job in PR. What you can do in parallel is seek out PR work with non-profits, local start-ups, charitable orgs, etc., that is not necessarily renumerated, but volunteer work in nature. This will be easier to find and can be very rewarding whilst it builds your experience to include in your cv. As you gain more working experience (even if it is volunteer work), your profile will become more relevant and interesting to prospective employers.
