When would be an ideal time to do independent research as a pre-med student?

I'm a undergrad in the pre-med track, and I'm want to go into the research field.
When do students usually start independent research? I know you can join labs and contribute to on-going research by cold-emailing professors, but I'm not really familiar with the independent research process as a credited class.
