I am trying to figure out my odds and wheather or not this is a reach school

Megan, your 3.813 GPA is impressive and higher than the average for MSU’s nursing program. Your 1170 SAT score is also close to their average. You have a strong chance, even though it’s a competitive program. Keep up the great work!

Hi Megan,
You are in a great position for Michigan State University's nursing program with your strong academic record. Your GPA of 3.813 is well above the minimum requirement, and while your SAT score is a bit below the direct-admit level, your GPA is a significant strength.
Let me share a Quick Overview:
a. Minimum required GPA: 2.75 (you have 3.813, which is fantastic).
b. Direct-admit path: SAT 1240 or ACT 28 + GPA 3.8 (your GPA is on target, SAT is slightly under).
c. Traditional BSN program: Apply after ~28 credits and prerequisites, focusing on GPA and coursework.
d. Average admitted GPA: 3.4–4.0, with recent averages around 3.89. You are right in line with successful applicants.
e. Your GPA is a strong point and puts you in a competitive spot.
f. Even though your SAT is a bit low for direct admit, you can apply through the traditional BSN route after finishing prerequisites.
g. MSU values more than just numbers, your coursework, essays, and experiences are important too. Volunteering, healthcare exposure, or strong personal statements can boost your application.
Next steps for you:
a. Focus on prerequisites like Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Statistics, Nutrition, Human Development, and English Composition. Aim for B grades or higher.
b. Highlight experiences such as volunteering in healthcare, shadowing nurses, or community service.
c. Stay confident—your GPA shows you can handle challenging courses. The SAT is just one part, and MSU values college coursework heavily.
My personal advice: MSU is competitive but definitely within reach. With your GPA, you are in a strong position. Keep up the good work in your prerequisites and build healthcare-related experiences to be a solid candidate.
Best wishes as you explore your options.

Hi - Yes, it is definitely possible for you to get accepted into Michigan State University, though whether MSU is considered a "reach" depends on **which nursing pathway** you are targeting.
Your **3.813 unweighted GPA is strong** and puts you comfortably above MSU’s overall middle 50% GPA range (3.5–4.0). Your **1170 SAT** falls right within MSU’s general middle 50% SAT range (1100–1320).
---
## 1. Direct Admission / Nursing Scholars Program (Reach)
If you are applying as a high school senior hoping for **Direct Admission** into the College of Nursing:
* **Odds:** **Reach**
* **Why:** MSU’s direct admit/Nurse Scholar pathway is highly selective and accepts a very small group of incoming freshmen. Direct admit candidates typically present SAT scores in the upper end of MSU’s range (1250–1350+) alongside high GPAs and strong STEM course rigor (AP/IB Biology, Chemistry, Math).
* **Strategy:** Since MSU is **test-optional**, you should evaluate whether to submit your 1170 SAT. While an 1170 is solid for general MSU admission, omitting it might be advantageous specifically for a direct-admit nursing consideration if your high school science and math grades are exceptionally high.
---
## 2. General Admission + Pre-Nursing Track (Target / Match)
If you apply to MSU as a **Pre-Nursing** major (where you take prerequisite courses during your freshman/sophomore years before applying to the BSN program):
* **Odds:** **Target / Match**
* **Why:** For general admission into MSU with a Pre-Nursing designation, an 85% acceptance rate applies. Your 3.813 GPA and 1170 SAT put you right in the standard admitted student profile.
---
## Key Takeaway & Next Steps
1. **General MSU Admission:** **Target / Safe Match** — You have a strong chance of being accepted to MSU overall.
2. **Direct Admit Nursing:** **Reach** — Competitive, but worth applying for if you highlight strong performance in high school science/math courses.
3. **If you enter as Pre-Nursing:** Your 3.813 high school GPA shows you have the academic discipline to succeed, but keep in mind that admission into the BSN program after sophomore year requires maintaining a **3.8+ college GPA** in core prerequisites (Anatomy, Chemistry, Physiology).
Your **3.813 unweighted GPA is strong** and puts you comfortably above MSU’s overall middle 50% GPA range (3.5–4.0). Your **1170 SAT** falls right within MSU’s general middle 50% SAT range (1100–1320).
