Hi Iris!

Yes, you can change your major. But, the longer you wait, the greater the likelihood that you will have taken some classes that don't count towards the new major. This is pretty expensive! So, focus first on your general requirements. If you know what you might want to change to, look at the requirements. If there are classes that count for both majors, take them next.

I urge you to do some career exploration activities to try to narrow this down as soon as possible!

Best of luck!

Kim

Serge V.’s Answer

Hi Iris,

Yes you can change your major but it's best to know what credits you can transfer to your new major. A lot of students change their majors all of the time. I hope this helps you out.

Lauren’s Answer

Yes, definitely! The process will change depending on your university (some make changing majors harder than others). At my college, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I had to declare my major as a freshman. I wasn't happy with it (I wanted to switch from Agricultural Business to Business) so I started an application process to change with the business department. I had to take some Business classes and maintain a 3.5 GPA or above to successfully switch. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it!

Lauren recommends the following next steps:

Research your college's policy on changing majors
Make a list of what interests you to help you find a major to match! (explore the class lists for each major)
Thank you comment icon Hi Iris, Yes you can definitely change your major in college. If you plan to change your major, it's best to see what classes can be transferred to your new major so you won't have to lose your credits. I hope this helps you out. Serge Serge V. Vaval, M.P.A.
