Teacher to Principal

I am currently a teacher and am looking to move into administration. I was hoping some others might have advice on this change and what I should expect? What is good and what is bad about the change in positions? Thank you! #education #teaching #teacher #career

Samantha’s Answer

Hello Matthew!

I recently made this change. I choose to move into an administrator roll because my strengths include leadership, strategy, and problem-solving. In addition to helping others, I am very motivated by numbers. Administration encompasses my passions with my strengths.

I think the biggest change that may be hard initially is that you will not interact with your learners as much on a day to day basis. You will be held accountable for everything that goes wrong within the school. If a teacher makes an error, it is YOUR error.

What I like most is that I have a bigger influence over change. Because I am so passionate about providing a progressive and innovative education, I try to provide my teachers with all the tools need to provide the learners with the best experience possible.

Samantha recommends the following next steps:

Find a mentor at your current school who can guide you through this process.
Ensure you have all of the correct certifications for you district. Most require a M.Ed or PhD with a pricipal cert. Check out SE.EDU They have a great M.Ed program that is afforable.

Hellos,

That is really good decision to move into administration. You are moving in a right direction. It will increase increases a bunch of responsibilities. And you know responsibilities make a person grow. And also remember one thing there is nothing good and bad in this world, its all our created perspectives. So go ahead and take up the responsibility.
