Ricardo’s Answer

Hi Nazhoni, I hope you are OK. An automotive technician can be a very fulfilling career if you like it and feel you have the skills.

Experience is essential, but you can also visit some trade and vocational schools to get more information; they can provide an orientation session and explain requirements, competencies, expected income, etc.

There are many schools in the Arizona area, such as the Arizona Automotive Institute and Universal Technical Institute (UTI). You can be an ASE Certified professional through some of these schools and additional experience, which would make you very competitive in this area.

You can also decide if you want to become a gasoline or diesel technician or even an aviation technician that requires other types of certifications. I hope this is helpful and all the best!

Ricardo recommends the following next steps:

Visit a trade and vocational schools like UTI or Arizona Automotive Institute

Sean’s Answer

I'll start by saying that I have never been an auto technician, but I worked in the automobile industry for 10 years in and around some excellent auto technicians and others that were just starting out. It is definitely an area that requires hands on experience. The technicians that I know who were successful started off working in the shop at a typical entry level role such as a oil technician. From there they would assist the master techs to learn as a sort of informal apprenticeship. Eventually, they would attend a school that was geared at official training. The tools to do this job are expensive, so I would start building a set of your basic tools. Shops can vary in quality and willingness to help you grow. Auto dealerships are typically a better place to start. They are typically pretty open and I would recommend going to all the dealerships in your area, go in to the service department and talk with the service manager.

Sean recommends the following next steps:

Visit local dealers and talk with the service manager to see if there are any open positions.
