Are there different ranks in being a crime scene investigator or are they on the same level?

Hello, Yes, there are different ranks and positions within the Crime Scene Unit. There are also some differences between agencies. I am also aware of a move towards certifications and licensures.

With our police service we have Constables (officers) and one Sergeant that do the Forensic work. I am the officer they report to. I am a Staff Sergeant (that is like a Lieutenant) and I assist with management and supervisory issues. I believe most places are like that.
