I think the best skill to have for college and for your career is the ability to take ownership of your own learning. That means using all the resources at your disposal (Professors, colleagues, industry professionals you know , etc). What I've quickly learned in my first year of full-time work is that college and universities only get you so far. You tend to learn very foundational skills in college that aren't necessarily directly correlated to the work you will be doing professionally. That being said, college offers an incredibly large network of individuals (and companies) and those networks should be leveraged to obtain additional information that will best prepare you for the career of your choice. Internships, networking and even sitting in on an adult in the industry you're interested in are extremely helpful!

For any profession, you will start with the foundational college courses, i.e. Chemistry for pre-med, Economics for Business. I would recommend attending the classes, keeping up with all of the homework, studying, and going to office hours if you need help. The most important skills/traits you can have, in my opinion, are being hardworking, self-motivated, and passionate about your field. This will help you reach your career goal!

When determining which career is best for you there are a number of things you can do. The most important is understanding yourself and what motivates you and interests you. Your career will last 30-40 years so you want to make sure that you chose a path that interests you. You can do a number of things - volunteer, talk to folks in careers that interest you, research on the internet and take intro classes in those fields of study.

As you progress in college, internships, volunteerism, participation in clubs/organizations and positions within those clubs all help to get exposure and opportunities for shadowing. Don't be afraid to try different things and make sure you enjoy it!!
