Would you recommend a career in Ophthalmology?
I’m considering going into medicine, but I don’t know what specialty is right for me. I would like a career where I can tackle important problems and make people’s lives better. What do you guys think? Would this be the right specialty? I’m trying to figure out which one is right for me. #medicine #healthcare #career-choice #career #science

Regardless how great is the course Opthomology, the first thing is to identify your interest Also talk to your career counselor to assists you or guide you with a choice in a situation where you have more than one in mind.
Lastly which is usually my first is to honestly talk to God about it. He will lead and direct you in the right career path.

Ophthalmology is a fascinating field of medicine, and technology is making the surgical aspects safer and easier. You will make a huge impact in your patients' lives protecting and improving their sight. The field is extremely competitive, so you will need to work really hard in school.

Yes, as long as humans need their vision to survive then ophthalmology is a good field of medicine to work in.

Having worked with both an ophthalmologist in the past, I can attest that this field would tackle immensely important problems and would help benefit patient lifestyle. There are many types of ophthalmologists as well (i.e: those who are general ophthalmologists and those who can specialize in retina or neuro-ophthalmology). Although I'm not as familiar with ophthalmologists who specialize, I can give some brief knowledge as to what general ophthalmologists do. Like optometrists, they are able to perform annual examinations where you can get a prescription for glasses, but ophthalmologists assess your eye health in the front and back of the eye. Ophthalmologists can analyze the front of the eye using an instrument called a slit lamp and can analyze the back of the eye upon dilation using a slit lamp with a special lens. They can also use OCT scans of the optic nerve, retina, and fundus photography in order to supplement their knowledge and to follow the progression of disease. Lots of patients come in for follow-ups with their glaucoma where the ophthalmologists assess how their intraocular pressure is doing under medical management. Some patients come in for emergencies that can range from extreme itchiness to seeing flashes of light. Ophthalmologists are also able to surgeries and minor procedures as well. I hope this description of the profession from what I gathered as medical assistant helps you narrow your options down!

Ophthalmology (despite the difficulty is spelling its name) is a great career. It is a surgical sub-specialty that combines clinic with surgery. You have the opportunity to perform elective and emergent procedures. You can have a predictable or non-predictable schedule. The salary is generous and the work very interesting.
