Getting starting in retail is relatively easy and a good start for any career. Find a brand that you are passionate about apply as a seasonal employee or part time while in high school and college. The skills that you learn by working a retail environment can easily translate to many marketing postions. Most retail manager postions are obtained by working your way up the ladder. The key is to excel at the entry level position by providing great customer service and meeting sales targets.

From my personal experience, I started as a part time retail worker in high school and worked my way up to Director in about 6 years time. When I left retail for Verizon, my management expereince helped me secure an entry level management job in Telecom. Completely different industries but the skill I learned easily transferred to managing a call center.

Best of Luck.

I would suggesting securing a degree with FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC. Then along with that degree be sure to obtain several marketing, advertising and management coursework. Join a retail organization like The Limited or Victoria Secret and start in management, working your way up to Supervisor or D.M. Get to know the HR recruiter within the retail fashion chain you are working and express your desires to work in Fashion as a category manager, buyer or marketing subject matter expert.

Enjoy the Fashion Marketing journey!
