Any science classes will be helpful. Many hygiene programs require the science classes needed as prerequisites and having good grades in them will help you get accepted. Chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology were required in my program. If you can get a part time job in a dental office it would put you ahead of the game when you start hygiene school. Good luck!

I had a relative that wanted to go into dental field. He took lots of science classes and had his heart set on it Fortunately his parents took him to have some aptitude testing (figured out what came easy for him) and did a variety of tests.. not just academic. You know what? He wasn't a good candidate for dentistry because his hand dexterity wasn't as good as it would need to be.

That was helpful information for him because it didn't mean that he'd never be a dentist.. just that he'd have to work harder than others would at it. As a result he went into another field where his aptitudes were a better fit. As you plan your next steps, you may also want to pursue this option. Or at least practice all the aspects of dental field to make sure you really want to do it. The aptitude testing my relative went to was at Johnson oconnor research foundation

Good luck!
