How useful is a degree in Computer Science?

I have been told that Computer Science is a good major in today's society. The thing is I am not exactly sure what you would do with a computer science degree. What would your career be exactly? What can you choose from? What's the difference between Computer science and engineer? #science #engineer #computer

Youve done a really good thing to stop and ask this question on possible outcomes before signing up. Many people jump in to a computer science degree because someone said it is a good degree. Whilst it may well be the best fit for you, it is also possible that there may be something that is a better fit for what you end up wanting to do in the workforce.

Adam recommends the following next steps:

Whilst it may sound counter-intuitive, think about what you want to do in the mid to long term.... as it is here that you are best to focus your efforts to show what is likely to be a good fit for your career. This can actually be the hardest bit - but is worth the effort!!!! From what you have done in life already, consider what are those activities that you like to do more than less... as examples do you like to solve problems?, create new things, work out how things work, build stuff, interact with groups of people (or just work alone), write, research, teach???? The better this is done the easier/clearer the next steps become...
Now that youve narrowed what you want to do as career options you can start to narrow down best options to get there... if you've identified something using computers and potentially fixing, building, writing code, understanding electrical theory then Computer Engineering may be a good fit.
If you are looking at something slightly different, consider what organizations may be in or near your region in that field and see if you can organize to chat online or go in and talk with their Human Resources or Information Technology department recruiters - as they will be able to guide you on what pre-requisitite studies will be good fits for your short list of studies...
Once you have got to the point of identifying some options, make the decision about which way you'll proceed and GO FOR IT. As a final guidance, there is no single RIGHT answer - it is best to think about it as what is most right for you. Good luck on your journey....

Hi there!


Computer science focuses more on the software side of computers. Programming and designing games and other applications. A computer science degree is good because it not only teaches you how to program (and once you learn the HOW, learning different programming languages becomes a matter of syntax) but it teaches you how computer programs work. A computer science degree, IMHO, is a useful foundation for any IT degree.


Computer engineering focuses more on the hardware aspects of the computer. It's more WHAT makes the computer mechanically run. It's almost like a computer based electrical engineering program. If you like tinkering with the computer or building them, then CE is a great career and major to focus on.

Very useful. Most companies nowadays need software engineers so you should be in a good position to get a job. Also more and more companies will need developers so it will be valuable in the future too.

It will also help you being structured in the way you solve problems.

These degrees are a must or very advantageous if you want to work in the tech industry. For sales its a nice to have, engineer its a must. The key thing is doing something you enjoy. If you enjoy it you will most likely get to a better uni and get a better degree. If you get a 2:2 from a poor uni it will be a struggle regardless. Apply yourself and give it your all in an area you enjoy.
