Although I wouldn't say looks matter, if you are in a corporate environment and wearing band tees and ripped jeans every day, you may not be presenting a personal brand that represents leadership which could hold you back. It depends on the culture of your company. If you are presenting yourself professionally, it should not matter what you look like. I have what I believe is a very successful career and most of my attire comes from the thrift store. :)
