I was the first one in my protective services unit to finish a doctorate, so it is definitely possible. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to sell their souls to the educational system for many years to complete the process. My coworkers I work with range from HS graduate only and go up from there. (My employer requires HS graduation, though, in some places, you can get away with only passing the certification tests if you never finished grade 12).
With California on fire right now, working in the field will help you gain steady employment if you choose to work in a department where chain fires are risky. If you are interested in this as well as aviation, finding certified people to fly the aerial planes that put fires out from overhead is difficult. If this is your goal, I would say look into ERAU worldwide, FL, or AZ because they have programs for it!
Another tougher find is a person who can install the sprinklers and the alarm systems. This is a love/hate job in the profession.
In my state, the certification for Firefighter 1 can be looped in with an associate program and is good for about 9-12 credits, depending on where you go for it. Some of my coworkers picked different degrees based on their interests- fire science, emergency services, management, etc.

Hi Elijah, interesting question! You can do both is the simple answer. Being a firefighter does require training and learning about fire, the equipment, and the techniques to put out a fire and remain safe. But there are other fields in fire safety and management that need more advance degrees like forestry science or fire equipment design. You can go for a PHD in forestry science or even an engineering degree and work in the same field as firefighter.
