Hi Hollie -

For someone that's been doing this since straight out of college, there are so many aspects that I love about my job. Right off the bat, I definitely have a passion for sports, but also for storytelling, and at the end of the day, that's really what we're doing. Whether it's a :30 tease, 10:00 feature, 30:00 show, or 3-hour game, we're trying to tell a compelling story. To be able to do that in a very high profile and high pressure situation is extremely gratifying.

It's not an easy job, and definitely not one that's boring and repetitive. Every game, every show is different. There are some high stakes. Any mistake is a fairly public one with thousands of eyeballs watching, but those successes, are equally public. I love that rush and the challenge of a live environment. My job is take all of the possible pieces of telling that story, set a vision for my entire team, empower them to support that plan and impart their own ideas, and then execute and adjust during the show as new storylines develop.

Good luck and hope you find your passion!

Hey Hollie!

So glad you are interested in getting into the world of Broadcast Media. Really know what you want to do in Broadcast Media though - there are A LOT of different areas that make what you watch every day on TV. The first question you might want to ask yourself is are you interested in producing content (aka what you as a viewer/consumer of media see everyday on TV) or are you interested in more business side of how things operate (aka all the stuff you as a consumer might not be thinking about - Advertising Sales, Marketing, Legal, Technology, Finance). You don't just have to go into the world of production - though it's a big part of a broadcast media company, it's only one arm of what makes everything run.

I personal work in Advertising Sales which is one of the two major revenue generators. Ad Sales hits home in so many different ways - you work with advertisers to create a platform to get their messaging across to viewers/consumers in the best most cost effective way. Think of the advertisements you see on TV - the sets that have transformer characters stomp in or all of the SuperBowl ads... this is all made possible by the ad sales group, but you have to work closely with the marketing group, the production groups oh and don't forget the advertising agencies and about 1,000 other groups to get that one awesome 30 second piece of creative on air. My personal favorite part is being a part of the development of an advertisers marketing concept. There are some pretty amazing marketing campaigns that companies come up with and I love that I am a part of the implementation of making that concept come to life and get out there to the viewers while also tying in something relatable like sports. Advertising is a pretty amazing world!

You are right in saying that Broadcast Media is so exciting - it's non-stop and being a part of a live news organization is even more exciting and ever-changing.

Good luck in your career endeavors!

I'm a commercial producer. I write, shoot, and edit commercials for local businesses. Dealing with clients and account executives all through the process. Every project I do is different, every business is different. To understand what a client wants, you have to understand their business. So it's always different. Thats what I like about the job. Their are hard days, their are easy ones, but most the time it's fun. Advertising isn't for everyone and you have to know how to meet a deadline and work with people.

Hi Hollie -

Happy to hear you are interested in Broadcast Media. As others have stated there are many areas that fall under this umbrella so unless you already know your desired area it would be good to explore what some of those are and also try to do as many informational interviews as people are willing to do with you. They will provide you with some great insight to the various areas and not to mention the good interview practice.

To answer your question...I love most that things are always changing in this industry and there is always something new to learn. I also like that not too many of my days are the same since we work in a live sports environment.

Best of luck to you!
