People don’t intentionally act this way but you may feel excluded or unwelcome at times please understand that you are changing a culture that has been dominated by men for decades and now we are coming to the table. Find your allies, find mentors and mark your place you can do this

Lisa’s Answer

Hi there. My son attended a small engineering school which tries very hard to have an almost 50/50 male to female student body. He had a number of friends who were girls and ended up in all female dorm suites Junior and Senior year. There is little adversity for women in engineering now except for maybe Civil Engineering. Everything else is wide open. You most likely will be working with more men however. This can be seen as a negative but that's just the way it is right now. My son's friend Jenny helps workers in a manufacturing environment and has to accept that some of the older guys will say "thanks hon" after she solves a problem for them. Not a big deal. So, you will be in demand by employers! The more of women entering engineering means the next generation of girls won't be asking your question. No one makes a big deal over women becoming policemen now, right? I knew of only 3 choices in grade school - 1. Teacher 2. Nurse 3. Secretary. GO for it!
